Abstract Art Workshop

Jess Levine – Tutor.
I work as an abstract artist using mostly printmaking techniques, but I also draw on collage, charcoal drawing, oil painting and mixed media. I trained in the South East and attended many additional courses to keep the emphasis on practical work and a sense of making, rather than on the academic side. I have exhibited widely across the UK and have work in private collections all over the world.
In leading the six week course I wish to share techniques and processes in – printmaking (geli plate monoprints.) – collage – expressive drawing (black and white – charcoal, graphite and ink.) – oil painting – colour mixing / colour theory- mixed media (combining the specialisms listed above)
The majority of the sessions will be hands on with an emphasis on participants finding their own creative ‘voice’ . There will be a loose theme within each specialism listed above, though this can just be a starting point. These subjects / starting points / areas of emphasis are – abstracting the landscape- still life / interior space- considering the seasons- urban design and composition- referencing the figure- creating abstract designs by working macro – eg the details within nature / using a view finder to select and edit. – also an overarching reference to colour, texture, composition, aspects of design, repetition, colour wheel theory, expressive and experimental use of materials, working loosely and freely, markmaking.
I will compose short videos to show as well as demonstrate, and all sessions will be well resourced and planned. I have a vast selection of books from which I can select and highlight relevant areas and images / relevant artists.
The artists i will reference are – Jenny Saville – Emil Nolde – Sandra Blow – Pablo Picasso – Jan Brine – Katie Sollohub – David Tress – Willem De Kooning – Vincent Van Gogh and I’m sure many others – relating images and discussion to the subject each week.
There will be an opportunity to share and discuss images made at the end of each session, and I will be active throughout the sessions in offering help / suggestions and so on, as the need arises.
I hope this information is useful. The charge for a six week course is £ 70 per person. All materials are provided, though if participants wish to bring their own that’s fine.
6 consecutive Wednesdays 7-9 pm on August 11th, 18th, 25th and September 1st, 8th and 15th
