Encaustic Art

Tuesday Evenings 7pm to 8:30pm for a term of 6 weeks starting from 15th of June

Tutor – Philip Marshal

I took up this media about 10 years ago. I was having art therapy after a serious accident (to assist with my PTSD symptoms) and loved the freedom of expression it created, the psychedelic colours and patterns; the fact that adults and children love the magical nature of the creations and that it was unique and created a wow factor.

I have taught since 2002 and always embraced creativity, discovery through enquiry and freedom of expression. I know that I’m an unconventional teacher but that is fine. Kids have thrived in feeling able to just be themselves under my supervision and to enjoy their childhood. I wanted to provide a platform for children to get creative without judgement passed on its merits or their feelings. I felt mainstream was not enabling me or the children to be fully immersed in this ethos.

I have worked with individuals and smaller groups on creating artwork. People of all ages too. Everyone has enjoyed doing it and it feels less of an onerous task in producing a longer piece as it can be with other art techniques. It can bring about immediate results however there is much to be said for etching in and adding smaller detail by removal of small bits of wax to create depth and detail, which prolongs this period of art-making. Colour mixing has also proved to be  huge hit with the kids. Polishing parts of a picture with tissue can add light and a gloss effect. It is a multi faceted means of art-making and I have found that all have been willing to have a go without worry of the outcome. The mystery of its effects have lured the artists in to the realms of encaustic art discovery and creation.

This course runs for 6 weeks at £70 per term. All materials provided.
